6 Tips for Unforgettable and Fun Senior Photos
Have you ever looked at a group of senior photos and had a hard time telling them apart? Me too. And honestly, it’s kind of a shame, because senior photos are the one time in your life when it’s really entirely about you.
You have personality. A sense of style. Passions. Friends you love. So why would you want senior photos that look exactly like everyone else’s?
I’ve been photographing seniors in Cleveland for years, and my favorite part is that they’re all different. Different interests, different styles, different energy. Getting to know students is genuinely the best part of what I do.
I’m also a mom who just went through this whole process with my own kid, so I get it from both sides. It’s emotional. Your parents have feelings about this. (Spoiler: they were valid babies 3 seconds ago as far as we’re concerned, so bear with us.)
But here’s the thing – if you’re going to take senior photos, why not make them unforgettable? Here are 6 tips to make sure your session is as unique as you are.

1. Start with What You Actually Care About
The best senior photos come from real interests, not generic poses in a field. Are you obsessed with Harry Potter? Let’s shoot on the streets of downtown Cleveland and make magic happen with light. Are you a swimmer? We’ve had students photographed mid-splash with water flying everywhere. Theater kid? Let’s run through Playhouse Square like you just won a Tony.
Your action step: Make a list of 3-5 things you’re genuinely passionate about. Sports, music, art, books, your dog, sustainability – whatever matters to you right now. That’s your starting point.

2. Pick At Least Two Locations That Mean Something
Location matters, but not in the way you think. It’s less about “the best spot in Cleveland” and more about what feels like you.
We’ve done sessions at school pools, downtown streets, nature preserves, the theater district, even someone’s backyard with their chickens. The location should support your story, not dictate it.
Your action step: Think about where you spend your time. Where do you feel most like yourself? That’s probably a better location than a random park you’ve never been to.

3. Plan for Two Vibes: You AND What Everyone Else Wants
Here’s the reality: you want photos that feel like you. Your parents and grandparents want a nice portrait they can frame. Your school needs a headshot. The good news? You can have both.
That’s why our sessions are longer than most – we need time to do the wild, creative stuff you’ll love AND get the beautiful, classic portraits your family will treasure. It’s not one or the other.
Your action step: Talk to your family about what they’re hoping for. Get everyone on the same page before the session so no one’s disappointed. And if you’re working with us, we’ll take on this part so you get to just enjoy. The biggest challenge when you’re working on your first family group project is setting expectations in a way that works well for everyone.

4. Wear What Makes You Feel Confident
I know the style guide you found says “avoid busy patterns” and “stick to solids,” and that can be true (sometimes). But here’s what matters more: wear something that makes you feel like yourself.
If you’re not a dress person, don’t wear a dress. If you live in your letterman jacket, bring it. If you feel most confident in jeans and a great top, perfect. The goal is for you to look like you on your best day – not like someone else’s idea of what a senior should look like.
Your action step: Lay out your outfits a week before your session and actually try them on. Make sure you can move, sit, and feel comfortable in them.
5. Bring Someone Who Makes You Laugh
The best senior photos happen when you’re actually having fun, not when you’re trying to look serious and model-y. Bring your mom, your best friend, your sibling – whoever makes you feel relaxed and will crack you up between shots.
Some of my favorite images happen because someone off-camera said something ridiculous, and the student forgot they were being photographed for a second.
Your action step: Don’t show up alone and stressed. Bring backup who knows how to make you smile.

6. Choose a Photographer Whose Work You Actually Like
This sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many families book a photographer because they’re cheap or convenient, then wonder why the photos don’t look like what they wanted.
Browse through full galleries, not just highlight reels on Instagram. Make sure their editing style is something you’ll love in 20 years, not just right now. And if you’re going to spend the afternoon with someone, make sure their vibe matches yours. And if you work with us, you’re going to need to be cool with mom jokes; the humor is solid over here.
Your action step: Look at at least 3 photographers’ galleries before deciding. Ask yourself: would I be excited to hang these on my wall?

The Bottom Line
Senior photos should be fun. They should feel like you. And they should give you images you’ll actually want to look at years from now – not just check a box and move on.
